Springtime traverse with pack dogs, On this late spring backpack in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, we hike from the Arctic Ocean coast into the peaks of the Brooks Range. Crossing paths with wildlife amid the rugged terrain, we will also watch the land awaken to summer as the first birds arrive and the first wildflowers bloom beneath the midnight sun. We walk this 90-mile route with the traditional porter and companion in the north: the Alaskan husky. Sled dogs the rest of the year, our friendly, obedient dogs will help us put away the miles: by mid-trip we will be down to large day pack loads. Three layover days. Maximum party size: 4,

Arctic ocean paddle - 9 Days, Paddling 40 miles of arctic coast can be sublime. It is an arctic1.jpg (27685 bytes)unusual region to say the least, with endless views over the arctic ice pack to the north and majestic views of the 9,000-ft. Brooks Range to the south. Light and temperature conspire to create mirages . . . mountains whose  summits trail off like smoke, caribou that look like mammoths, land forms that do not exist.  But you can believe your eyes when you see ringed and bearded seals, musk oxen, caribou, and an array of sea birds along this stretch of wildly beautiful coast. Can combine with the Kongakut River 

Caribou Migration Backpack - 8 Days

This 40-mile backpack route takes us through steep-walled limestone valleys, alpine meadows, small cottonwood forests, and past waterfalls.  This is an excellent trip in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for crossing paths with caribou, Dall sheep, wolves, grizzlies, and golden eagles. We are accompanied on this hike by good walking and breathtaking scenery. With wide-open tundra, clear-flowing rivers and good fishing, wildflowers and wildlife, this backpack is hard to beat. We will have two layover days, Can combine with the Kongakut River.


Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Caribou Herd Migration
 - 10 Days,
Each year 150,000 caribou of the Porcupine Caribou Herd migrate north through the Brooks Range to their calving grounds in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. On our 90-mile paddle to the Arctic Ocean, we descend through mountains, ice arctic2.jpg (35949 bytes)fields, and Class III rapids. Then we traverse the renowned coastal plain to a barrier island in the Arctic Ocean. In addition to caribou, we often see musk oxen, Dall sheep, wolves, and grizzly bears. We will have two layover days, one in the mountains, one on the delta, where we see tundra swans, snowy owls, old squaw ducks, and arctic fox.   (10 actual days in the Refuge). Barrow and Prudhoe Bay

Barrow is the northernmost point on the continent, 330 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and Alaska's largest Eskimo village. Here, at the "top of the world," knowledge about the environment and animal behavior continues to be essential for day-to-day survival. You'll learn the ceremonies and traditions of the 4,000-year-old native culture as you tour the new Inupiat Heritage Center, take part in native dances, and see a demonstration of the traditional blanket toss. Your tour includes a chance to exam­ine the unique flora of the tundra up close, view the Arctic Ocean, take a short walk in a birder's paradise, watch for wildlife and stand inside the skeleton jaw of a bowhead whale.

Optional Prudhoe Bay. The following morning, fly to Prudhoe Bay to begin your Southbound Dalton Highway trip. Travel the rugged Dalton Highway made famous during construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Walk out on the delicate yet spongy tundra of the Arctic Coastal Plain and feel the veins of ice just beneath the surface. Pass through the majestic Brooks Mountain Range and cross over the Continental Divide at Atigun Pass. Overnight at  rustic Coldfoot. Visit the Visit the historic gold mining community of Wiseman. Cross over the Arctic Circle.  Enjoy dinner on your own at a restaurant OR take a short OPTIONAL cruise on the Yukon River (picnic meal served on boat). Visit the Arctic Circle Trading Post situated in the rural community of Joy, Alaska before returning to Fairbanks. historic gold mining community of Wiseman. Cross over the Arctic Circle.  Enjoy dinner on your own at a restaurant OR take a short OPTIONAL cruise on the Yukon River (picnic meal served on boat). A Day at the Top - Barrow Arctic Tours -
You'll depart from Anchorage or Fairbanks in the morning aboard Alaska Airlines flight 143 bound for Barrow. En route, you'll cross the Arctic Circle. You may see snowy owls, eider ducks and others of the 230 bird species which summer here. Touch the Arctic Ocean. Walk on tundra and permafrost.  Stand in a whale bone arch and inside the skeletal jaws of a bowhead whale on the shore of the Arctic Ocean.  Learn about the original village site mounds, which have been dated to 1200 A.D. See where the Inupiat Eskimos have historically conducted whaling festivals.  Travel to the northern-most point in North America accessible by road. Back to Barrow for lunch on your own. Experience and take part in traditional Inupiat dancing and see other demonstrations including a blanket toss. Time to shop for local arts and crafts will follow at the new Inupiat Heritage Center and Museum. Overnight at the Top of the World Hotel. Dinner will be on your own. Dine at Pepe's North of the Border, serving the finest Mexican food in the Arctic, or Arctic Pizza. Flights daily, full day.

 On Top of the World - 2 Days - This excursion gives you everything "A Day at the Top" does, but with more time to relax and explore this fascinating Arctic area. Enjoy an overnight at the Top of the World Hotel as you take in the midnight sun and scenery of the Arctic. The Top of the World Hotel offers overnight visitors comfortable rooms, an in house restaurant and gift shop. Two flights daily, 2 days & 1 night.


Kotzebue and Nome

Kotzebue lies 36 miles above the Arctic Circle, deep in Inupiat Eskimo country, The Inupiat are a friendly people, and their crafts, customs and traditions are fascinating. All tours to Kotzebue include a visit to a cultural camp where native youth and elders, eager to carry on their cultural heritage, share traditional crafts and customs. At the National Park Service Visitor Center and the NANA Museum of the Arctic, see dioramas of local wildlife and demonstrations of Inupiat dances and customs, including the traditional blanket toss. The plant life on the nearby tundra is quite unique, making your guided tundra walk like a visit to another world, particularly while enjoying the effects of the midnight sun. The gift shop has unique native crafts including whalebone carvings and baleen etchings. Overnight visitors will find a modern day comfort at the Nullagvik Hotel.

Nome, situated on the Seward Peninsula by the Bering Sea, is rich in colorful gold rush history and is home to the world's longest dog sled race. The Iditarod commemorates the heroic attempt of dog sled teams to deliver serum to Nome during the diphtheria epidemic of 1924. Have your camera ready as you pull into a dog musher's camp, where you'll experience first-hand the difficulty of dog racing. During your visit to Little Creek Mine, you'll be greeted by a gold miner's family and learn about the gold strike history of the 1890s. See modern day prospectors looking for the big strike and try your own luck at panning for gold--where what you find, you keep! Shoppers and collectors will find exquisite jade, hand-carved ivory and skin sewings here at the little creek mine. 

A Day in Nome -
You'll depart Anchorage in the morning aboard Alaska Airlines flight 152 bound for Nome. Upon arrival in Nome, your guide will give a brief orientation and outline of your visit to Nome and how the gold rush shaped this frontier town. Lunch will be on your own. On the Nome tour, you will learn about the exciting history of this gold rush town. Visit a dog musher's camp, where you will see sled dog teams in action and learn about the training and care of dog teams. The city tour will continue with some time in Nome to browse in local shops for native crafts and treasures. Visit Little Creek Mining Station, where you can pan for your own gold and receive a souvenir miniature gold pan. Dinner will be on your own. Say goodbye to the Arctic as you depart for your return to Anchorage on Alaska Airlines flight 153.

A Day in Kotzebue - From Anchorage, fly across the Arctic Circle as the sun comes up. Spend a full day in Kotzebue and return to Anchorage this evening. You'll depart Anchorage in the morning aboard Alaska Airlines flight 152 bound for Kotzebue. Upon arrival, your guide will give you an orientation and outline of your visit to Kotzebue. The city tour will start with a visit to an Inupiat Cultural Camp, where village youth and elders will explain and demonstrate various aspects of the Inupiat culture and lifestyle. Learn how animal hides are skinned and tanned to make clothing such as mukluks and parkas. The city tour will continue. Back in town you will have time to browse in search of local native crafts & treasures. Explore the remarkable structure and life of the tundra during a guided tundra walk. Lunch will be on your own at the Nullagvik Hotel. You may have some extra time to explore Kotzebue. One of the major highlights of any Kotzebue visit is the NANA Museum of the Arctic. Here, a show includes a multi-media presentation about Arctic wildlife, an Eskimo culture slide show, dancing and a blanket toss demonstration. Say goodbye to Kotzebue.
