9 DAYS ITINERARY

Day 1: Depart Nome on one of Bering Air Charter flights 
Departure time: Nome 12:30 p.m. (Sunday)

Day 2: Arrival at the Provideniya Airport via the Bering Air charter. Short excursion trip (9 km) from the airport to Provideniya, along the Emma Bay with a short presentation about history, economy and people inhabiting Ureliki village and Provideniya town. accommodations at an apartment (managed as a hotel), traditional Russian home-style lunch, visit to the local museum exhibition. There is possibility that local native (Chukchi and Eskimo) dancing ensemble will give a performance; walking tour in town to the Bering monument, shopping, dinner in the local cafeteria or in the apartment, outdoor equipment check, and discussion of the tour.

Day 3: Light breakfast, we travel by ATV bus (25 km) to the native village of New Chaplino (population of 425); village tour and meet with local people (Siberian Yupiks). Drive (12 km) to the local hunters’ camp at the Inahpak place; accommodation at the hunters cabin, lunch; observe gray whales and sea birds at the Chechekuem, straight. Depending on weather, either dinner and spend the night at the hunters cabin, or we go by boat to the Gil’mimil’ lagoon (around the Sinyavina hot springs) on two aluminum skiffs “Lund-18 boats, equipped with 40 h/p outboard motors, CB radios, GPS, safety vests and rain gear. During the boat ride (about 1 hour) you might see the migration of the gray whales, walrus, seals, and sea birds. Set up our tent camp, and then dinner.

Day 4: Breakfast, loading and boat ride to the Ytygran Island (14 km) and visit to Whale Bone Alley. Light tundra lunch, boat ride (9 km) to Nunengan Island, one of the richest sea bird colonies (mural, kittiwake, puffin and cormorant). Return to the base camp, walking tour, and fishing, swimming in the hot springs, dinner with tundra gifts served (salmon, mushrooms, berries, seal and walrus.

Day 5: Breakfast, loading and boat ride along the Senyavina strait to the entry to the Penkignei Bay, visit to the Merninkan Island (Toporkovyi) colony of the horned and tufted puffins, pigeon guillemot; tea in the tundra, boat ride to the Native village of Yanrakynnot (population of 360, engaged in the reindeer herding and marine mammal hunting). Excursion in the village, visit to the local hospital, shop, abandoned fox farm. Steam at the private sauna, dinner with a native family in their home including tasting of the subsistence foods (reindeer meat, berries, mushrooms). Sleep in the village apartment.

Day 6:  Breakfast, loading and boat ride along the Senyavina strait to the base camp with a stop at the Arakamchechen Island and visit the grave of the clipper Gaidamak’s sailor Egor Purin buried in the 1875. If we encounter walrus, you might observe traditional walrus hunting of the Chukotka’s indigenous people using harpoons and carbines, and butchering of the walrus. Return to the base camp, berry picking, gathering of mushrooms, swimming in the hot springs, dinner.

Day 7: Breakfast, loading and boat ride (12 km) to the Aboleshevo bay and further visit to seals howl. Observation of seabirds, return to the base camp, free time for coastal walks and swimming in the hot springs, farewell dinner, and sleep.

Day 8: Breakfast, loading and return to the hunters’ camp Inahpak. Load the ATV bus, return drive (37 km) to Provideniya, sauna, final farewell dinner in local cafeteria or in the apartment, sharing of the thoughts about the tour; sleep at the apartment.

Day 9: Breakfast in the Apartment, loading and drive to the Provideniya airport, customs clearance and passport control Depart Provideniya on Bering Air return to Nome, Alaska.

Arrival time: Nome 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Upon our arrival in Nome we proceed through United States Customs and Immigrations.
